I have taught painting in schools, colleges, universities and, since 1983, in Adult Education.

I have built up a wealth of knowledge about how people learn and how to create a friendly and productive learning environment.

I have taught structured courses in which students learn skills that can quickly be applied to individual pieces of work. I have always encouraged students to be brave with their interpretation of a subject, to work with the potential of the medium and to avoid the tyranny of copying.

More recently I work with experienced artists/students who benefit from support and mentoring. My Space for Creativity courses give students the time and physical space to concentrate on their art and the creative space to build confidence with some guidance and take some risks. I work hard to understand what the student wants from me and tailor my advice to their individual need.

I produce large acrylic abstract canvases. You can see my paintings @laurelsmart on Instagram. I show my work regularly with the North Bristol Artists in the last weekend of November and at various venues throughout the year.
